Killer Hand: Chapter 3

Writing by ScottOliver on Tuesday, 18 of November , 2008 at 12:22 am

Due to meet Amanda at seven for breakfast at the Showboat, Sully pushed through the revolving doors making his way outside. It was just after 6a.m when his feet hit the boards. With time to spare he decided to take a short stroll before hopping a jitney uptown. A warm shock of sunlight rose over Steel Pier. The cerulean sea, its waves cresting with effervescent brilliance shimmered with a reflection of the morning’s sunrise. The warm taste of salt lit upon his lips. Licking them he slipped on his shades adjusted his baseball cap and tightened his laces. September in Atlantic City is the gem of the calendar year, he thought. This was the perfect beginning to a killer Indian summer day. Not a superstitious gambler he still couldn’t help but to think that today luck was on his side. Maybe there would be more perfect days ahead for Atlantic City, too.

The convention bureau boasts that she’s ÒThe City that is Always Turned On”. But some folks would say the Òold girl” Atlantic City was nothing but a has-been, a three legged dog whose days of glory were behind her. But Sully was a faithful hound who loved a gal and that gal was Atlantic City.

The holiday season is coming up, and I know for many of you it’s a season of giving, both to friends and family and to (hopefully) those less fortunate. With that in mind, I would like to point you all in the direction of a very worthy cause in the hopes that you’ll consider donating to their efforts. Faceless International spreads their efforts over a variety of causes, including Fair Trade and fighting slavery in India by encouraging their volunteers to get involved. The organization hosts several trips a year, where participants get hands on experience helping to promote change.

To learn more, and to hear their mission statement put more eloquently than I ever could, please visit their website.

A general admin update

Writing by Demy on Monday, 10 of November , 2008 at 7:41 pm

If you’ve been paying super, super close attention to the front page in the past few days you might have noticed a few subtle changes. If you haven’t (and I won’t think less of you for it) here’s a quick and easy run-down of whats new.

Sidebar: The sidebar to the right of the screen has been cleaned up to make navigation around the site easier. The comment feed has been removed so you can now see catagories and sections without scrolling away from the top post.

Sections: A seperate fiction and poetry page has been created under the sections heading. To access this page click on “Fiction and Poetry” under the sections heading on the sidebar.

And that, as they say, is that.

Incipit Writing (univocalic)

I’m writing this, sitting sighing; I ink this insipid, livid witticism.
Stilting it first with nitwit critic’s priggish hindsight, still thinking if
its rid with simplistic gimmicks it’ll stink with rigid chic. It’ll insist
its shtick, highlighting it with hijinks, glib might,  childish limits, lisping
in its blind bits. Is this wit? I find in scribing flight, I slip-trip-flip in I’s mind,
drilling, skiing, dripping.  I fill in kings’ ill lists with skill. I kill it in visits.

I’m High. It’s in sight, this pig, its shrimp, this pissing fish, binding its
lips in ink, thinly kissing script, linking this ill lit pit in spirit, in which it fits.
It is its limits, limp civic lists trick vivid victims, whilst I, writing in distinct
prisms, pitch this ink with rich insight/in sight. I dip this pin in ink—ink brisk with
British spirit, ink frigid with Irish drink.  Writing is scribbling, it’s shitting
bright whittlings, singing in signs.  I’m imbibing writing.

It’s timid, sick with wishing, insisting this inviting hip twist, this six tins fit clips.
Criticism tight sights kids, stripping, licking, dipping dicks in things this will will
rid if it’s stifling I.  I, kind Inn Nihilist, writing…  I, critics bitch, writing…
I, this mind, this vivid wiring, this lint, this ditch, this sifting bin, this this
is wind, shrilling in sills fiddling, singing with twinkling sin.  Ink isn’t Wii.
Writing his stinking, misfit virgin is Ink. Ink is night. This is Mii.  I’m this ink. Ink is I.

Healthy Cookies to Die For

Healthy Cookies to Die For

by: Elizabeth Lyver

Looking for a healthier version on a yummy treat?  How about a chocolate chip cookie that could potentially lower your risk of cancer and lower your cholesterol?   Is this starting to sound more like a work of fiction rather than a recipe?  Well let me explain….

In an effort to become more heart healthy on the advice of my physician, I decided to try to eat most of my starch in the form of whole grains.  In the supermarket on evening, I decided I wanted to try an oatmeal-like whole grain cereal called Muesli.  I had heard of this concoction before, yet had never tried it.  Not familiar with it?  Well the particular brand I was eyeing up contained rolled oats, wheat, rye, triticale, barley, dates, raisins, sunflower seeds, almonds, and walnuts.  So I pick up a package of Bob’s Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli.  I got home and tried some.  Pretty good, but I would have done unspeakable things to get a little sugar in it (On the advice of my aforementioned physician, I was to cut back on refined sugar as well……God grant me the serenity).

Because I must read everything placed in front of me, I started to read the package.  ‘Turns out Muesli is super good for you.  I then discovered that it was invented in the 19th century Physician for his patients.  It contains fruits, which can lower your risk of cancer.  It contains whole grains, which are good for your cardiovascular health.  It contains nuts that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids.[1]

After having researched the benefits of Muesli, I then got back to reading the package.  Lo and behold, there is a recipe for chocolate chip cookies!  I am guessing at this point that my prayers have been answered.  I can eat this stuff that is so good for me, and now the recipe on the side of the package is a sweetened up, yet still pretty good for me mixture using the super good for me Muesli.  It is a low-fat applesauce version of a chocolate chip cookie using Muesli and whole wheat.  OK, so I know there is some brown sugar in it.  I was supposed to cut back on sugar, not cut out!

So, I leave you with this.  A piece of fruit is better for you than the healthiest cookie out there.  I am not saying you can or should sit and eat 1000 of these cookies.  That would not be good for you.  However, if you are going to eat a cookie, why not grab a healthier one?  They are quick, easy and pretty good for you.   I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Bob’s Red Mill Chocolate Chip Cookies

¾ Cup Whole Wheat Flour

½ tsp. Baking Soda

½ tsp. Salt

2/3 Cup Applesauce

¾ Cup Brown Sugar

½ tsp. Vanilla

1 Egg

1 Cup Muesli

6 Oz. Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Heat oven to 375o.  Sift flour, baking soda and salt together and set aside.  Blend applesauce, sugar and vanilla together.  Beat in egg.  Add flour mixture and mix.  Stir in Muesli and chocolate chips.  Drop by tablespoonfuls on lightly greased cookie sheet.  Bake at 375o for 10 – 12 minutes.[2]

Makes 24 cookies.
