Subtraction changes things

garfield minus garfield

It’s amazing how a little subtraction can change things. A BLT with the bacon subtracted is taste bud cancer. A car with the wheels subtracted is a hunk of steel, a hunk of steel that can double as shelter during the zombie invasion. A spider without a web is a tarantula.

Find new sites through The Webby Awards

Writing by sharpster on Monday, 21 of April , 2008 at 8:55 am

Webbys

So The Webby Awards are in the public voting phase. I wouldn’t know anything about them, but a couple of the sites that I visit on a regular basis were nominated and have their “vote for us!” banners up. I figured that if some of the sites that I like were nominated, there was a good chance that I’d find some other interesting sites by browsing through the voting section on the Webby website voting page. overdrive

The first issue of Richard Stockton OVERDRIVE (The caps are necessary to stress the extent of the overdrive. It’s similar to the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive.) is up on an Internet near you. (Read more…)

Make Andrew Mathas play Guitar Hero for charity

Writing by sharpster on Friday, 11 of April , 2008 at 10:25 am

Child’s Play

Some of you may know Andrew Mathas, the lovable Internet personality behind several videos making fun of how easy it is to misunderstand some songs’ lyrics. His first video, and probably the most well-known, lampoons Fall Out Boy. I know you’re thinking, “how can the serious, heart-wrenching lyrics of Fall Out Boy be taken lightly?” This is how.

He recently posted a challenge to the Internet community on his blog. If 250 people leave comments, he’ll play through every Guitar Hero game in a row on expert mode for charity. All the money he raises will go to the Child’s Play charity. And if he manages to raise $500, he’ll play through Rock Band on drums. So go comment on his post HERE and let’s get the kids some games.

Time’s blog index

Time’s Blog Index

Time.com just came out with their first ever blog index. Thefhiz isn’t on the list, so I’m debating how accurate the thing is. I bet some of the sites don’t even exist.

Mixtape? Muxtape

Writing by sharpster on Wednesday, 2 of April , 2008 at 8:16 am

muxtape

Keeping with my music theme over the past couple posts, here’s a site for people who like to say “mixtape” but with Jello in their mouthes. Muxtape.com let’s users upload twelve songs to create their own mixtapes, which seems like a good idea until you take the users’ music tastes into consideration.

Ubuweb Outsiders

Writing by ozandres on Monday, 3 of March , 2008 at 3:46 am

lingling.gif

It used to be called “Found + Instane,” but Ubuweb’s Outsiders section is still a trove of ephemeral, engimatic weirdness that pays revisiting. Just ask Ling-ling. She’s (?) sitting on my lap right now, which would be really cool except I can’t find her body.

The collection’s origins are in ubu.com’s creator Kenneth Goldsmith’s collection of notes, posters and other odd bits of signage that he found on New York’s streets and subways. including an ambitious sequence by whomever-the-heck-it-is now known as the “Free Jack Ads.” The city speaks, Kenny listens, and though this could hardly be called a conversation, given the right sort of attention (and perhaps a bit of paranoia), you can find messages from the invisible in any urban area. Beats reading Apple ads.

The collection has expanded to include ”found” audio files and other projects inspired by making art out of the culture’s detritus and wonkiness. Good place to hunt for ideas!

Intrade.com — gamble on more things

Writing by sharpster on Tuesday, 12 of February , 2008 at 3:11 pm

popeye gambling

Barely keeping afloat with that gambling addiction? This’ll sink the raft.

Intrade.com allows users to bet on a variety of topics they would usually only bet on with friends for like twenty dollars. With Intrade, the entire Internet is your friend and the bet can be your life savings.

I know I’ve been dying to bet on who’ll receive the democratic nomination and, by extension, what the voters of Pennsylvania will do at the polls. See, I know what they’re thinking up there. That’s what I plan to tell the bank manager when I try to get a loan.

Intrade isn’t perfect yet. Users still can’t bet on things like “how many fingers am I holding up?” and “I just picked something up. What is it?” But I’m sure they’ve got people working on that problem right now. How many people? Five? I think it’s five. I bet you it’s five.

A murder of new Counting Crows

Writing by sharpster on Thursday, 7 of February , 2008 at 7:30 pm

murder of counting crows

You know, like a swarm of bees or a horde of gerbils or a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr.

When I posted about the new Counting Crows tracks up on their website, I didn’t realize that the Internets had become home to an entire flock of new tracks off the coming album. Apparently I’m not much for detective work, and by “detective work” I mean “using Google.”

I’m really lovin’ the track Cowboys that I found over on Myspace. Oh, I know, as if we needed another reason to visit Myspace. I’m spending virtual days there already just taking in the atmosphere, conversation, and fine graphic design work.

I also like the lead single You Can’t Count On Me that was just released for Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings.

Following up the bunch is Come Around, a countryish mix of mellow …melody. There’s a taste of The Fhiz’s music review prowess right there.

So, go snack on those with your ears. And don’t forget the digital 45 still playing at CountingCrows.com

Kraft tricks worms with delicious poison

Writing by sharpster on Wednesday, 6 of February , 2008 at 10:28 am

gummy worms

I was digging this morning, and I stumbled upon (If it’s possible to “stumble upon” something on “digg.” Both companies probably have trademarks on the terms) this article on the Environmental Graffiti blog.

The gist is that Kraft is working on a food with a pesticide rich formula to combat the rampant intestinal worm problem of Asia, South America, and Africa. I’m thinking it’s some kind of cheese; if it tastes horrible, Kraft can claim it’s just the natural cheese flavor …while some exotic swamp platypus lactates in a big jar at the Kraft lab.

But isn’t this a step backward from society’s “organic, no hormones, no msg, no irregularlly shaped salt, and made from the pubic feathers of angels” food craze? Or maybe it’s a step forward? This could be the start of a bold future. Soon they’ll be Kraft foods with radioactive isotopes. I can see the commercials nows. “Kraft Krumbles will glow with a mellow heat as they “krumble” on to your salad!”
