Foxboro Hot Tubs: Green Day 2.0

Writing by look_i'm_liam on Thursday, 29 of May , 2008 at 2:29 pm

Are you a fan of Green Day but afraid to admit it? It is no secret that a lot of people have jumped off of the Green Day band wagon once “American Idiot” came out a few years back. The common saying heard from a Green Day fan is “I only like to listen to old Green Day.” This usually means Albums that were released before “Warning” was released. Well people, you are in for a treat.

Try searching for a band called Foxboro Hot Tubs. These guys may sound like a Green Day wanna be band playing 1960s music. Guess what? It isn’t a wanna be group, but actually Green Day!
Green Day decided that with the newer style of Green Day it would be a better idea to start a side project to continue playing a style closer to the 3-chord pop punk that made them the band they are today. The band is the exact members of Green Day, not an idea like Boxcar Racer was where only 2 of the 3 members of Blink-182 took part.

Anti-Flag: Bright Light or Good Night?

Writing by look_i'm_liam on Wednesday, 21 of May , 2008 at 8:30 pm

The Bright Lights of America

Political punk band Anti-Flag recently released their newest album titled The Bright Lights of America. Where the songs are continuing to move away from the “Bush-bashing” that they started with the release of “The Terror State” they remain to share their emotions and complaints about how this country is not how it should be.

The sound that comes from this album is nothing new. It is the same sound they have been using since their A-F Records debut album “Mobilize.” The only difference is that there does not seem to be as much creativity in the music as there once was. Where the lyrics are still catchy it just sounds like recycled versions of songs from previous albums.

From a band that claimed to be against establishment and stood for many beliefs including remaining more underground they have started releasing more radio friendly albums and even have music videos which are played on both Fuse and MTV along with having “This is the End (For you my Friend)” included in a number of EA Sports video games it just seems that they are beginning a pull a 180 on what the band is and what they once stood for. Not to mention how they switched from their self-run A-F Records and released their newest album after signing a contract with RCA which is one of the largest and most popular record labels in the nation.

Mixtape? Muxtape

Writing by sharpster on Wednesday, 2 of April , 2008 at 8:16 am

muxtape

Keeping with my music theme over the past couple posts, here’s a site for people who like to say “mixtape” but with Jello in their mouthes. Muxtape.com let’s users upload twelve songs to create their own mixtapes, which seems like a good idea until you take the users’ music tastes into consideration.

I bet this comes as a shock to a lot of you. I bet you were all lounging around, firm in the belief that YouTube is for video. Sorry, I know it was one more thing to cross off the list.

One benefit of being a comedy couple

Writing by sharpster on Monday, 25 of February , 2008 at 11:30 am

A few weeks ago, Sara Silverman released a scandalous video on her boyfriend’s late night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. The video made Silverman’s graphic relationship with Matt Damon public. She’s fucking Matt Damon. Jimmy was stunned and, I’m sure, crushed by the news.

I’m guessing that after weeks of crying and drinking, Jimmy pulled himself together enough to get even. (Read more…)

I found out why John Edwards lost the nomination

Do my eyes deceive me? Is that John Mellencamp? If so, this post is already off to a bad start.

Who on the John Edwards’ campaign staff thought appearing at a John Mellencamp concert was a good idea? Was Bruce Springsteen busy? Was Bruce Springsteen tied up in John Mellencamp’s basement sleeping off a sedative when the campaign’s communication staff called artists? “Hey, John here, John Mellencamp.” “Hi John, I’m calling on behalf of John Ed…” “BRUCE IS BUSY I’LL DO IT.”

If Mellencamp was running for president and he appeared at his own concert, he’d lose votes. This is assuming that he’d have votes left after the “America’s Just One Big Small Town”, “Terrorists Don’t Suck Chili Dogs”, and “We Need A Cougar In The White House” campaign slogans.

A murder of new Counting Crows

Writing by sharpster on Thursday, 7 of February , 2008 at 7:30 pm

murder of counting crows

You know, like a swarm of bees or a horde of gerbils or a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr.

When I posted about the new Counting Crows tracks up on their website, I didn’t realize that the Internets had become home to an entire flock of new tracks off the coming album. Apparently I’m not much for detective work, and by “detective work” I mean “using Google.”

I’m really lovin’ the track Cowboys that I found over on Myspace. Oh, I know, as if we needed another reason to visit Myspace. I’m spending virtual days there already just taking in the atmosphere, conversation, and fine graphic design work.

I also like the lead single You Can’t Count On Me that was just released for Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings.

Following up the bunch is Come Around, a countryish mix of mellow …melody. There’s a taste of The Fhiz’s music review prowess right there.

So, go snack on those with your ears. And don’t forget the digital 45 still playing at CountingCrows.com

Counting Crows offers two new tracks

Writing by sharpster on Friday, 25 of January , 2008 at 1:28 pm

Crow

Actually, both of the tracks aren’t new, and it could be argued that neither of the tracks totally are.

Being a big Counting Crows fan, I’ve been waiting for the new album to hit for a couple years now. I usually check the site every week or so to continually crystallize my disappointment. I got a surprise the other day when www.countingcrows.com opened up with a whole new main page and two downloadable tracks off the new album, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings.

The first track is 1492, which has been in bootlegged live form for a while now.

The second track is I Dream of Michelangelo, which is a direct reference to a previous Counting Crows lyric.

I like both, but I’m not sure how much yet.

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings DROPS March 23rd.

Cake plays Sewell, NJ Dec 8th

Writing by sharpster on Wednesday, 28 of November , 2007 at 2:14 am

South Jersey

cake-b-sides-and-rarities.jpg

Cake, the band known for their lack of vocal prowess and joyful antics, is playing at the Commerce Bank Arts Centre in Sewell, NJ on Dec 8th. Tickets are $35.

I can’t remember the last time Cake came to South Jersey, so all the SJ Cake fans holed up indoors, waiting for Cake to set the sun shining with their Unlimited Sunshine Festival, should be pleased. Ticketmaster is advertising “special guests” for the show, but knowing Cake that could mean anything from Kermit the Frog and the rest of the Muppets playing xylophones, to what’s left of Jim Morrison’s corpse working the spoons.

Cake just released B-sides and Rarities, and their last CD, Pressure Chief, is really worth checking out.

Check out some song samples of decent length on their site.

Pandora beer and music party in Philly Dec 5th

Writing by sharpster on Tuesday, 27 of November , 2007 at 4:25 am

Philadelphia

Being an esteemed member of the Pandora community, I was included in the ultra-exclusive email sending that just went out for this Pandora Budweiser bash in Philadelphia.

No one is more surprised than me; I stopped using Pandora because apparently I can’t hodgepodge together a music type that doesn’t make me want to skip every other song, a practice Pandora frowns upon and only allows every once in a while. I was always stuck listening to some horrible blend because I carelessly input “counting crows” and “death” into their Music Genome (which I’m told has nothing to do with “gnomes”, but I don’t buy it).

The interesting part of the little ad is, “Budweiser is also providing hors d’oeuvre and Budweiser Select beer (other beverages will be available for purchase).” This leads me to believe that the hors d’oeuvre and Select will be free. But Pandora was also supposed to be the answer to my music problems forever, so I’m wary. They probably make you drink a bunch of different drinks at the door and then puke in a bucket so a Budweiser representative can taste it and figure out your exact malt. Then that’s free.

Might be worth checking out, though.
