YouTube is for music

I bet this comes as a shock to a lot of you. I bet you were all lounging around, firm in the belief that YouTube is for video. Sorry, I know it was one more thing to cross off the list.

YouTube is a great place to watch some kid juggle pineapples or to catch up on the latest video-blog from turtle lover and collector–Shelltastic14, but YouTube is also a great place to listen to music without having to pay for it and without all the legal mess involved with trying to steal it.

Go, go to this YouTube place right now and type in an artist. There’s a good chance you’ll find some kind of music video from the band themselves, from someone who taped a live show, or from some random user playing the song over top of her …juggling pineapples. And you don’t even have to watch the video. Just throw it in some Firefox tab and listen to the song like you had actually paid for it. Like YouTube’s video quality, the music quality is less than stellar, but it seems to matter less with a good song. Maybe it’s because just listening to a song only assaults your ears.

And look at the obscure stuff you can find! …?

Innocence Mission - Lakes of Canada.

In this case, the video actually goes with the song and is interesting the first time around. I mean, sped up pumpkin carving layered with Innocence Mission somehow turns the entire event into some nostalgic experience. Which is in stark contrast to silent pumpkin carving at normal speed.

Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day

This one’s a good watch if you also like to drive around in the snow, but only after the county was considerate enough to clear the roads for the easier filming of YouTube videos.

Oh yeah, that’s Jeff Buckley up at the top covering Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Jeff’s dead now. Sorry. Go buy Grace.

I find it interesting just how many loopholes something like YouTube creates in The Great Copyright Debate. I also remember seeing an interview with the creator of YouTube, and he defined the site as a failure due to poor content. At least someone sees it my way.
